Position title: Forestry, Climate Change and Biodiversity Conservation Technical Advisor

Reports to: Chief of Party
The Forestry, Climate Change and Biodiversity Conservation Technical Advisor will be part of a team working to reduce the threats of deforestation and climate change in Indonesia, and help the Government of Indonesia (GOI) conserve the country’s tropical forests, wildlife, and ecosystem processes (including carbon sequestration). The multi-year program will identify priority landscapes on which to focus, and work within three main areas: land and forest resource governance; improved management and conservation of forest resources in a changing climate; and improving private sector, local enterprise and markets linkages. All of the program activities will be implemented within the context of climate change and resulting impacts on conservation efforts.
Position is contingent upon receipt of donor funding.
Essential responsibilities:
* Serve as the lead technical advisor on issues relating to forestry, climate change, and biodiversity conservation
* Provide technical insight and guidance on the selection of priority landscapes for targeted interventions
* Identify best management practices (BMPs) to be adopted by stakeholders, including fire prevention, adaptation to climate change, reduced impact logging, timber tracking, and others
* Provide technical assistance in the implementation of spatial and land use plans
* Coordinate on the design of local awareness and capacity building activities for local groups, including a Climate Change Vulnerability and Adaptation Workshop
* Ensure climate change considerations and issues are incorporated across program activities
* Provide substantial input to annual workplans, as well as quarterly, annual and final performance reports to the donor
* Other duties as assigned
Qualifications and background:
* Education: A graduate degree in forestry management, environmental management, conservation, or related field. PhD preferred.
* Work Experience: At least fifteen years of forestry and biodiversity conservation sector expertise, especially related to practices for sustainable forest management and reduction of destructive practices.
* Proven experience in undertaking activities related to capacity building, improving policy and regulations, sustainable forest management practices, and data collection /monitoring of forests and wildlife resources.
Experience incorporating climate change issues into forestry and biodiversity activities.
* Skills: Strong communication skills, both in writing and in interpersonal contexts.
Ability to manage diverse, multi-cultural teams, creatively solve problems, and remain flexible.
Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook.
* Other: Strong English writing and speaking skills.
Proficiency in Bahasa Indonesia and knowledge of Indonesia working environment is beneficial.

* Develop sustainable financing mechanisms at target landscape sites to support rehabilitation and conservation efforts
* Build capacity to utilize investment screening tools based on environmental standards by banks and other financial institutions
* Identify carbon finance opportunities, and develop training programs for government officials, NGOs, private sector and communities in available options and protocols
* Conduct cost-benefit analyses of alternative land use options, with technical inputs from team members
* Coordinate with the private sector to build awareness of the US Lacey Act, and its impact on Indonesia’s timber exports
* Provide substantial input to annual workplans, as well as quarterly, annual and final performance reports to the donor
* Other duties as assigned
Qualifications and background:
* Education: A graduate degree in business administration, natural resource economics, forestry management, environmental management, or related field.
* Work Experience: At least fifteen years of business and marketing chain development, with at least 10 years related to forestry production, forest products marketing, and chain of custody certification practices.
Proven experience in undertaking activities aimed at business development policies and licensing regulations, capacity building for small businesses, and private sector adoption of sustainable forest management practices.
Knowledge of Indonesian certification issues.
* Skills: Strong communication skills, both in writing and in interpersonal contexts.
Ability to manage diverse, multi-cultural teams, creatively solve problems, and remain flexible.
